The Experience

Hands sticky from jackfruit, I’m watching our driver Sunil wave at a passing tuk-tuk near Dambulla Cave Temple. The air inside those caves is cool and smells faintly of incense—so different from the thick heat outside. He points out a mural I’d have missed: a line of tiny golden Buddhas along the ceiling. I try to count them but give up halfway through. Later that afternoon, we’re bouncing in a jeep at Minneriya, dust swirling behind us, and suddenly there’s this hush—hundreds of elephants just grazing together by the water. I didn’t expect to feel so small or so lucky at the same time.

Climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress before breakfast was my idea (not sure my knees forgave me). The sun was barely up but already warm on the stone steps. Our guide Priya told us stories about King Kashyapa and pointed out the faded frescoes—she laughed when I tried to pronounce “Pidurangala.” Afterward, we took a bullock cart through muddy village paths and helped cook dhal curry over an open fire with a local family. My shirt still smells faintly of woodsmoke and cardamom days later.

Somewhere between sipping sweet tea at Blue Field Plantation and standing in mist near Ramboda Falls, I realized how much I love Sri Lanka’s hill country. Nuwara Eliya felt almost like stepping into someone else’s dream—colonial houses, schoolkids in white uniforms skipping stones at Gregory Lake. In Ella we waited for the train to cross Nine Arches Bridge; everyone cheered when it finally did. There were leeches on Little Adam’s Peak (just one), but honestly, it made us laugh more than scream.

The last morning by Galle Fort was slow—shops opening late, sea breeze carrying hints of cinnamon from somewhere behind those old walls. We wandered cobblestone streets with no real plan except maybe one more coconut roti before heading back toward Bentota Beach. It’s hard to explain what sticks with you after a trip like this—a certain light in the hills near Kandy, or just how kind people are when you try (and fail) to say “thank you” in Sinhala.
