Step-by-step itinerary

Wildlife safaris in two national parks

  • Pickup from hotel
  • Udawalawe National Park safari
  • Visit Elephant Transit Home
  • Yala National Park safari
  • Drop off at hotel

The Experience

You get picked up from your Negombo hotel (or from Colombo, Galle, Mirissa and a dozen other coastal towns) and head inland to Udawalawe National Park, where the open grasslands and wetlands hold wild elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, deer and monkeys. The jeep safari takes you deep into the park with your experienced driver-guide, who knows where the herds move and when the birds are active. You'll also stop at the Elephant Transit Home, a rehabilitation facility within the park where orphaned elephant calves are cared for before release back into the wild.

After lunch, you drive to Yala National Park on the southern coast. This second safari focuses on a different landscape and a different set of animals—Yala is known for its leopards, sloth bears and a wider variety of bird species than Udawalawe. The jeep goes deep into the park again, and the timing means you're there during active hours. By the end of the afternoon, you're back at your hotel with no transport to arrange, no entry fees to track, and no decisions left to make about where to go next.

The whole day runs 13 to 17 hours depending on your pickup location and how far you are from the parks. Bottled water travels with you, and lunch is included. Everything else—the jeeps, the guide, the park entry, the driving—is arranged and paid for upfront, so there are no hidden costs and no negotiations at the gate.

Top questions

Can I do both Udawalawe and Yala in a single day from Negombo?

Yes. The tour departs early from your hotel and visits Udawalawe National Park first, then Yala National Park after lunch. Both parks are covered in one day with private jeep safaris at each, though the drive between them is substantial and the day runs long.

What animals might I see on the safaris?

Udawalawe is known for wild elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, deer and monkeys, plus many bird species. Yala adds leopards and sloth bears to the mix, along with different bird populations. Wildlife sightings depend on season, time of day and animal movement, so no specific animal is guaranteed.

Is the Elephant Transit Home a separate stop or part of the Udawalawe safari?

The Elephant Transit Home is a facility within Udawalawe National Park where orphaned elephant calves are rehabilitated. It is included as a stop during the Udawalawe portion of the day.

What's included in the all-inclusive price?

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Negombo or nearby coastal areas, private jeep safaris at both parks, all entry fees, lunch, bottled water and an experienced driver-guide. Breakfast, drinks beyond water and tips are not included.

How long is the full day, and when does it start?

The tour runs 13 to 17 hours depending on your pickup location and distance from the parks. It begins with early-morning pickup from your hotel to maximize wildlife viewing time at both parks.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the parks?

No. Private transportation with your driver-guide is included from hotel pickup through drop-off. The jeeps used for the safaris are also private, so you're not sharing with other groups.
