The experience

The jeep picks you up from your Negombo hotel or near the airport and drives 2.5 hours to Wilpattu National Park in the northwest lowland dry zone. Once inside, you spend the day traversing the park in a private vehicle, scanning the landscape for wild elephants, leopards and other wildlife. Wilpattu's defining feature is its "willus": natural sand-rimmed water basins that fill with rainwater and draw animals to drink, making them predictable places to watch for sightings.

The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total and includes park entrance fees, lunch, bottled water and snacks. You'll also pass the salt processing area on the route back. Because the jeep is private, the pace and stops are yours alone. The guide speaks English and can adjust where you linger based on what wildlife appears.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange separate transport. Children from age 1 are welcome, and the vehicle is wheelchair accessible if you need it.
