The experience

The tour runs eight days and seven nights, starting with airport pickup in Colombo and ending with a drop-off back there. Your chauffeur guide stays with you the entire time, driving a late-model air-conditioned car and ready to take detours to restaurants, shops or anywhere else that interests you beyond the itinerary. Each day moves between regions: the first night settles you in Negombo beach town, then the route heads south through Bentota (where you can add a boat safari on the Madu River and visit a cinnamon estate) and past turtle hatcheries to Galle Fort, a UNESCO-listed coastal stronghold. From there you push inland to Yala National Park for an early-morning safari starting at 6 a.m. (the park is known for leopard sightings) before moving on to Ella.

Day four is built around a train journey: you catch a reserved-seat train at 9:30 a.m. from Ella to Ambewela, a three-hour ride through tea plantations and mountain scenery, while your driver meets you at the far end with your luggage and continues to Kandy via Nuwara Eliya. Along that route you stop at Gregory Lake, Ramboda Falls, and a tea plantation where you can taste different Ceylon teas and try tea-leaf picking. Kandy holds two nights: the itinerary lists the Royal Botanical Garden, a woodcarving center, a war memorial, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, but the guide will adjust based on what appeals to you. There's also an optional cultural dance performance in the evening.

The final stretch heads north to Sigiriya, stopping at a spice market and a village-life experience with bullock-cart and catamaran rides before climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress at sunrise (or later if you prefer). Then it's a three-and-a-half-hour drive back to Colombo for the last night, with time to explore the city (Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, the Old Parliament Building, and shopping options) before your driver takes you to the airport three hours before departure. Bottled water, lunch each day, and all expressway tolls are included.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What's included in the 8-day tour and what do I pay extra for?

The tour includes private transport, your English-speaking chauffeur guide, hotel stays, daily lunch, bottled water, and all driving costs. You pay separately at each site for entrance fees: Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Yala National Park's off-road safari and guide, the turtle hatchery, and the Colombo Lotus Tower if you visit. The Madu River boat safari at Bentota is also paid on-site.

Do I have to wake up at 5:15 a.m. for the Yala safari?

The morning safari at Yala starts at 6 a.m., which means leaving your hotel around 5:15 a.m. If that's too early, your guide can arrange an afternoon safari instead, though the morning departure is when leopard sightings are most likely.

How does the train ride from Ella work?

You board a reserved-seat train at 9:30 a.m. from Ella station heading to Ambewela, a three-hour journey through mountain and tea-plantation scenery. Your driver takes your luggage separately in the car and meets you at Ambewela station, then drives you onward to Kandy via Nuwara Eliya.

Can the chauffeur take me to places not on the itinerary?

Yes. Your guide is available throughout the tour and will take you to restaurants, shops, or any other sites you're interested in, even if they're not listed in the planned stops.

What's the accommodation like?

You stay in three-star hotels: beachfront or near-beach in Negombo, a hotel in Yala (in nearby Thissamaharama), a nice hotel with views in Ella, a good-standard hotel in Kandy for two nights, a hotel in Sigiriya, and a modern city hotel in central Colombo for the final night.
