The experience
Sigiriya Rock sits 370 meters above the surrounding jungle on a plateau formed from an extinct volcano's magma. The fortress complex dates to the 5th century, when King Kasyapa built a royal residence here, though monks occupied the site for centuries before and after. The main entrance is marked by the Lion's Claws: the surviving stone feet of a massive lion sculpture that gave the rock its name, Sihagri, meaning Lion Rock. Inside, the western wall holds 18 frescoes depicting female figures in vivid colors, painted during Kasyapa's reign and among the oldest surviving artworks of their kind. The Mirror Wall, polished so thoroughly that the king could see his reflection, is now covered with inscriptions and poems left by visitors dating back to the 8th century: proof that Sigiriya drew tourists more than a thousand years ago.
The tour includes a stop at the Sigiriya Museum near the ticket booth, which explains the site's role in ancient trade routes connecting the Gulf, China, India and the Roman Empire. From there, you move to Pidurangala Rock, an adjacent site with a temple and a much more natural feel than Sigiriya's engineered grandeur. Pidurangala is only slightly lower than Sigiriya and offers 360-degree views of the valleys and the fortress itself: many travelers climb here at sunrise, then return to Sigiriya for sunset. The third stop is Dambulla Cave Temple, built on a 600-foot rock rising from the plains. The complex dates from around the 2nd century BC and was expanded through the 18th century, housing five caves filled with Buddha images and rock paintings in vivid colors. The largest cave was constructed under King Vattagamini Abhaya in the 1st century BC as a refuge during invasion. He later converted it into a temple by building walled partitions and a drip ledge to protect it from rain.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (3 to 11 years): free. Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.
What is the Mirror Wall at Sigiriya and why is it significant?
The Mirror Wall is a polished stone surface on Sigiriya's western side that was so thoroughly finished in the 5th century that the king could see his reflection in it. Today it is covered with inscriptions and poems left by visitors over more than a thousand years, with the oldest dating to the 8th century: making it evidence that Sigiriya was a tourist destination long before modern travel.
Can I see the frescoes at Sigiriya, and what do they depict?
Eighteen frescoes survive on Sigiriya's western wall, painted during King Kasyapa's reign in the 5th century. They depict nude female figures in vivid colors, believed to represent either the king's wives and concubines or priestesses performing religious rituals, and are considered among the oldest surviving paintings of their kind.
What makes Pidurangala Rock worth visiting if I'm already climbing Sigiriya?
Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya and only slightly lower, but it offers 360-degree views of the surrounding valleys and a clear view of Sigiriya Rock itself: the best vantage point for photographing the fortress. It also has a temple with a more natural feel than Sigiriya's engineered palace complex, and many travelers climb it at sunrise before heading to Sigiriya for sunset.
How old is Dambulla Cave Temple and what will I see inside?
Dambulla Cave Temple was first constructed around the 2nd century BC and expanded through the 18th century. The complex contains five caves filled with Buddha images and rock paintings in vivid colors, all carved and painted into a 600-foot rock. The largest cave was built by King Vattagamini Abhaya in the 1st century BC as a refuge during invasion, then converted into a temple with protective stone partitions and a drip ledge.
