The experience
The tour starts at Vessagiriya Forest Monastery, one of the island's two oldest Buddhist dwelling sites, where your guide walks you through how Anuradhapura looked during its golden era: its agriculture, fine arts, architecture and engineering. From there you move through the eight sacred places: the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, a living fig tree sent from India in the 3rd century BCE and now nearly 2,300 years old; the Brazen Palace, where standing granite pillars mark what was once a nine-storey administrative center with 1,000 chambers; and Ruwanwelisaya, the great stupa built in the 2nd century BCE that was destroyed during the Chola invasion and restored to its original form in 1940.
The remaining stops reveal the hydraulic engineering and artistry that shaped the kingdom. You'll see two ornamental ponds built on low ground; a 4th-century steam bath where monks treated skin diseases; a granite trough in the Abhayagiriya Monastery refectory that once held rice for 5,000 monks; a stone carving from the 8th century showing the craftsmanship of ancient artisans; the Eth-Pokuna (Elephant Pond), a 3rd-century man-made reservoir three times larger than an Olympic swimming pool with underground conduits still functioning; and a moonstone doormat carved as a work of art at the foot of shrine steps. Your guide explains the purpose and history of each site as you move through them.
The tour runs 4 to 5 hours and includes private transportation, an English-speaking guide, bottled water and stops for photographs. Hotel pickup and drop-off are part of the booking. Entry to the UNESCO World Heritage Area is not included in the tour price.

What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree and why is it important in Anuradhapura?
The Sri Maha Bodhi Tree is a fig tree nearly 2,300 years old, sent from India in the 3rd century BCE as a branch of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. It is the first of eight sacred places in Anuradhapura and has been venerated by successive kings, monks and lay Buddhists ever since, making it likely the oldest human-planted living tree with the longest written records in the world.
What can I see at Ruwanwelisaya stupa?
Ruwanwelisaya, also called the Great Stupa, was built in the 2nd century BCE and destroyed during the Chola invasion in the 10th century. It was restored to its original glory in the 12th century and again in 1940. The stupa you see today is the most recent restored form, standing as one of the great architectural achievements of ancient Anuradhapura.
How long does the tour take and what is included?
The tour runs 4 to 5 hours and includes a professional English-speaking guide, private transportation, hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water and photo stops at each of the eight sacred sites. Entry to the UNESCO World Heritage Area is paid separately at the site.
What is the Eth-Pokuna and what makes it remarkable?
The Eth-Pokuna, or Elephant Pond, is a 3rd-century man-made reservoir built in the south-west of the ancient complex. It is three times larger than a modern Olympic swimming pool and features underground conduits that still function today, supplying water from nearby reservoirs and distributing it to smaller ponds: a demonstration of the hydraulic engineering skills of ancient Sinhalese builders.
What does the Brazen Palace tell us about ancient Anuradhapura?
The Brazen Palace was a nine-storey administrative center of the Maha Vihara Monastery Complex built in the 2nd century BCE under King Gamini Abhaya, with 1,000 different chambers. Its roof was thatched with copper tiles, which is where it got its name. Today, standing granite pillars mark the ruins of this grand structure.
