The Experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and moves through Anuradhapura's sacred geography at your own pace. A professional licensed guide leads you through the Mahamewna Gardens to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree planted in the 3rd century BC and the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a recorded planting date. From there the route covers the Brazen Palace, a 2nd-century BC monastic structure built by King Dutugmunu; the Ruwanwelisaya stupa, which once stood 122 metres tall and ranked among the world's tallest structures when built; and the Jethawanaramaya, a massive brick stupa that was a major center for Buddhist learning. The guide provides context for each site rather than rushing between them.

The afternoon includes the Thuparamaya Stupa, the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka and a repository of Buddha's collarbone relic; the Samadhi Buddha, a 7-foot-tall marble meditation statue; and the Isurumuniya Temple, a 3rd-century rock sanctuary carved with intricate sculptures including the famous Lovers relief. You also see the Kuttam Pokuna, a pair of ancient bathing tanks that showcase Sinhalese hydraulic engineering, the Elephant Pond (Eth Pokuna), a massive reservoir measuring 159 by 52 metres built to supply water to monasteries, and the Sandakada Pahana (Moonstone), an elaborately carved semi-circular stone slab typical of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. The guide explains the evolution of these carved elements and their place in the city's religious and civic life.
