We started right outside the old city walls of Anuradhapura, our guide—Chaminda—already waiting with these surprisingly good bikes (mine was a Trek, which I didn’t expect out here). He handed me a bottle of water and grinned, “Ready for some history?” The first stretch took us down bumpy village roads where kids waved and shouted “hello!”—it felt like everyone was still waking up. There was this earthy smell from the red dust mixing with the morning air. I tried to keep up but got distracted by a monkey perched on a shrine wall. Chaminda just laughed and said it happens all the time.

Our first stop was the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. It’s not just any tree—it’s supposed to be the oldest recorded one in the world, grown from a cutting of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha found enlightenment. People were quietly laying flowers at its roots; there was this gentle hum of prayers and bells somewhere nearby. Chaminda explained how pilgrims come from all over Sri Lanka just to circle it once in their lives. I felt oddly moved standing there, even though I’m not Buddhist. Maybe it was the way sunlight filtered through those ancient leaves.

We cycled on to Lovamahapaya—the Brazen Palace—and then Ruwanwelisaya stupa, which is massive up close (I nearly tripped over my own feet staring up at it). Chaminda told stories about King Dutugemunu and old wars that sounded almost mythical. At Kuttam Pokuna—the twin ponds—I dipped my fingers in the cool water and realized how clever these ancient engineers were. We stopped for tea at a tiny shop near Abhayagiri Monastery; I tried to say “thank you” in Sinhala but probably butchered it because everyone laughed kindly.

The last bit wound through more ruins: moonstones carved with elephants and swans, silent Buddha statues in meditation poses, even an old rice canoe that looked like something out of a storybook. My legs were tired by then but I didn’t really want it to end—you know that feeling? There’s something about seeing Anuradhapura by bike that makes everything feel closer. I still think about that hush around the Samadhi Buddha statue when we stood there for a minute not saying anything at all.
