The experience
Sigiriya rises 370 meters above the surrounding jungle on a plateau formed from an extinct volcano's magma. The site served as a Buddhist monastery from the 3rd century BC until King Kasyapa built a royal residence here in the 5th century. After his death it returned to monastic use until the 14th century. The main entrance was carved as a massive stone lion: only the feet survive, but they gave the rock its name, Sihagira, meaning Lion Rock. The western wall still holds eighteen frescoes from Kasyapa's reign, depicting female figures in a style that celebrated beauty over a thousand years ago. The Mirror Wall, polished so thoroughly the king could see his reflection, is now covered in inscriptions and poems left by visitors dating back to the 8th century, making Sigiriya one of the world's oldest tourist destinations.
The drive from Sigiriya to Polonnaruwa passes through jungle where the route sometimes reveals wild elephants and other animals. Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka's second capital after Anuradhapura fell in 1093, and reached its height under King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The archaeological park contains hundreds of structures (temples, tombs, statues and stupas) concentrated in a compact core. The Quadrangle alone, a cluster of monumental ruins, justifies the journey. The site shows how the city functioned as a thriving commercial and religious center when kings ruled the central plains from here eight centuries ago.

Top questions
What is the Lion Claws entrance at Sigiriya?
The main entrance to Sigiriya rock was designed as a massive stone lion during King Kasyapa's reign in the 5th century. Only the feet have survived to the present day, but they are distinctive enough that the entire fortress took its name from them: Sigiriya means Lion Rock.
Can I see the frescoes and Mirror Wall when I visit Sigiriya?
Yes. Eighteen frescoes survive on the western wall, depicting female figures from Kasyapa's era. The Mirror Wall, which was polished so thoroughly the king could see his reflection, is still visible and covered with inscriptions and poems carved by visitors dating back to the 8th century. Painting on the wall is now prohibited.
What will I see at Polonnaruwa?
Polonnaruwa's archaeological park contains hundreds of ancient structures (temples, tombs, statues and stupas) built when the city was Sri Lanka's second capital and a thriving center under King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The Quadrangle, a cluster of monumental ruins, is the most striking section.
How long is the tour and what does it include?
The tour runs nine hours and includes private vehicle transport from Dambulla, entry to both Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and a tuk tuk driving lesson. Your driver holds a license to enter restricted zones, so you access areas not available by bicycle or public transport.
Will I see wildlife on the route between Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa?
The jungle route between the two sites sometimes reveals wild elephants and other animals, though sightings are not guaranteed. Your driver knows the area well and can point out what appears along the way.
