The experience
The route starts two hours inland at Kande Vihara temple, where one of Sri Lanka's largest Buddha statues sits inside an ancient shrine. From there the tour moves to Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, a working hatchery where you see turtles of different sizes and learn how the breeding program operates. The stops build toward the coast: Madu River comes next, a sprawling wetland where you explore roughly 25 islands by boat, passing mangrove forests, bird colonies and small island temples that sit inside the largest lagoon on the southern shore.
After the river, a stop at a natural moonstone mine shows how the stone is extracted and processed into finished pieces. The day ends at Galle Fort, a Dutch colonial structure built into the coastline where you walk through museums and old buildings inside the fortified walls before the drive back to your hotel. A professional chauffeur guide travels with you the whole time, driving a comfortable private vehicle and handling all entrance fees, so the only logistics you manage is showing up at pickup.
