The Experience

The tour leaves Negombo and moves through the country's cultural and natural highlights over seven days. You climb Sigiriya rock fortress at 6:45am to beat the crowds, then visit Polonnaruwa's ancient kingdom ruins and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. The driver handles all the navigation and timing; you sit in an air-conditioned car between stops and decide what to photograph and how long to stay.

The middle days take you through the highlands. You ride the most famous train in Sri Lanka from Nanu Oya station down to Ella, passing tea plantations and mountain views. On the way you stop at Ramboda waterfall and walk through Nuwara Eliya, the colonial hill station. Ella sits at over 1,000 metres and is the base for seeing the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana waterfall before heading south.

The southern leg includes a 5am departure for a Yala national park safari—the chance to spot wild elephants and leopards. You pass through Mirissa and end at Galle Fort, the Portuguese and Dutch stronghold on the southwest coast, before the final drive to Colombo airport or back to Negombo. The itinerary also covers Minneriya or Kaudulla national park for the elephant gathering, a cultural dance show in Kandy, and the Royal Botanic Gardens with their orchid collection.

Your guide speaks English and travels with you the whole way. The car is spacious and fuel is included. Entry fees to sites, meals, your hotel rooms and safari jeeps are booked separately, so you keep control of those choices. If you want the driver to stay overnight near you, that costs USD 10 per night and can be added when you book.
