The experience
Five to eight hours gives you time to move through the main sites without rushing through any one of them. You start at Galle Fort, the UNESCO heritage monument from the colonial period, then head inland to Meetiyagoda, where families still cut and polish moonstones in the same way they have for decades. You can watch the work and see the gems before they leave the village. The Madu River comes next: a boat ride through mangrove plantations and islands in a biodiverse area that is one of the region's signature experiences.
Kande Viharaya Temple holds one of the country's tallest Buddha statues and draws pilgrims from across the Buddhist community. After that, the tour includes a stop at a turtle conservation project where you see different species and learn about their life cycles. The day ends at Hikkaduwa beach, known for snorkeling and fresh seafood. Your guide speaks English throughout and can adjust the route or add other stops if you want to see more of the local culture and food.
Transport is air-conditioned and the route is wheelchair accessible. The operator includes travel insurance with the booking. Pickup from your ship or hotel in Galle is part of the package, so you do not arrange separate transport to the first stop.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Galle Fort and why is it on this tour?
Galle Fort is a UNESCO heritage monument built during the colonial period and stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the south. It anchors the tour because it is the main historical site in the region and the reason many shore excursions from Galle begin there.
Can I actually see moonstones being made at Meetiyagoda?
Yes. Meetiyagoda is the world's only moonstone village, and families still cut and polish the stones there as a working industry. You watch the process and see the finished gems before they are sold.
Is lunch included in this tour?
Lunch is not included in the tour price. The day ends at Hikkaduwa beach, which is known for seafood, so you can eat there if you choose.
Can the guide change the itinerary or add other stops?
Yes. The operator states they are happy to add stops beyond the main sites to show you more of the local culture, people and food, so you can request changes when you book or on the day itself.
Do I need to walk a lot on this tour?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible, which means the main stops and transport are set up to accommodate different mobility needs. Walking varies by stop: some sites involve short walks, while others like the boat ride require minimal movement.
