Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Yala National Park Safari Experience

  • Hotel pickup in Galle area
  • Travel to Yala National Park
  • 4-hour guided jeep safari
  • Spot leopards, elephants, and wildlife
  • Enjoy lunch and bottled water
  • Return transport to hotel

I didn’t expect the air to smell that earthy when we rolled up to Yala — kind of like wet leaves and something almost sweet. Our driver, Suresh, had picked us up from Galle before sunrise (I barely remember getting dressed), and by the time we reached the park gate, the world felt wide awake. There were already a couple of jeeps lined up, but ours was just for us — no strangers squeezed in, which honestly made it feel less like a tour and more like an adventure I’d somehow planned myself. Suresh handed us bottled water with a grin and said something about “good leopard luck.” I laughed but crossed my fingers anyway.

The first thing I noticed inside Yala was how loud the birds are — not annoying loud, just everywhere. Our guide pointed out a peacock strutting across the track like he owned it. We bounced along in that Japanese jeep (not exactly smooth, but it felt right for the place), eyes peeled for anything moving in the dry grass. At one point we stopped because Suresh spotted elephant tracks — huge prints in red dust. He showed me how to tell if they’re fresh (they were). I tried to say “elephant” in Sinhala; he laughed so hard I thought he’d drop his binoculars.

The sun got high quick and everything shimmered. We saw crocodiles half-submerged near a muddy pond and a family of langur monkeys picking at fruit overhead. The real moment though? A leopard, stretched out on a branch so still I almost missed it. My heart did this weird double thump — I actually whispered “oh wow” without thinking. It’s strange how quiet everyone gets when you spot something like that; even Suresh just nodded softly.

Lunch was simple but good — rice, spicy dhal, some fried fish wrapped in paper. We ate under a tree while watching buffalo wallow nearby (they looked like they were having a better nap than I’d ever managed). The ride back was sleepy; I kept replaying that leopard sighting in my head. Even now, weeks later, sometimes when things go quiet at home I remember that hush under the trees at Yala.
