Step-by-step itinerary
Udawalawe National Park Safari
- Travel to Udawalawe National Park
- Explore wildlife sanctuary
- Observe Sri Lankan elephants
- Spot water birds and reptiles
- Enjoy safari tour
The experience
Udawalawa National Park sits on the boundary between two provinces and was created as a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the Udawalawa Reservoir. The park protects over 250 Sri Lankan elephants and is one of the most visited in the country, which means the timing and the route matter. A private 4WD jeep with a guide who knows where to look gives you a real chance to see them, rather than joining a queue of shared vehicles all heading to the same spot.
The jeep picks you up from your hotel and takes you into the park for a half-day that runs 6 to 8 hours depending on what you encounter. The vehicle is air-conditioned, so you're not baking between sightings, and the guide navigates the park roads looking for elephants, water birds, and the other mammals and reptiles that live there. You're not on foot chasing animals. You're moving through their habitat in a vehicle built for the terrain, stopping when something appears.
All fees, taxes and transport are included in the price. If you want breakfast before the safari starts, a few restaurants operate near the park entrance, though these aren't part of the booking. You'd arrange that separately. Infants sit on an adult's lap during the drive.
