Bentota River Boat Safari is a two-hour guided boat tour through the mangrove lagoon near Bentota, Sri Lanka, where you spot crocodiles, water monitors, kingfishers and other river wildlife in their natural habitat. The experience

If you're staying in Bentota or the nearby coastal towns and have a free morning or afternoon, this river safari fills two hours without requiring you to arrange transport or navigate on your own. The boat departs from the Bentota River lagoon, which forms where Sri Lanka's third-largest river meets the Indian Ocean. A local guide boards with you and points out what moves in the water and trees as you drift through the mangrove channels: water monitors basking on the banks, kingfishers and bee-eaters diving for fish, fruit bats hanging in the canopy, cormorants, eagles, and the crocodiles the safari is known for. The river's width and the calm lagoon water mean the boat moves slowly enough to spot things without rushing past them.

The tour lasts two hours and you pick the start time: anywhere between 7am and 4pm works, so you can fit it around breakfast, a late lunch or an afternoon free from other plans. Hotel pickup happens from Bentota, Induruwa, Kosgoda, Ahungalla, Balapitiya, Ambalangoda, Aluthgama, Beruwala, Maggona, Kalutara, Waskaduwa or Wadduwa, depending on which area you're staying in. The driver brings you back to your hotel when the safari ends. Bottled water is onboard, and the package includes all entrance fees, activity charges and taxes.
