The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Galle, Mirissa or Ella and a drive to Udawalawe National Park, where your wildlife tracker meets you at the entrance. The park is one of Sri Lanka's most reliable places to see wild elephants, and the four-hour game drive takes you deep into grassland and scrub habitat where herds move between water sources. You'll also watch for sloth bears, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo, crocodiles and the occasional leopard, along with water birds that make the park an important refuge. The Safari Jeep keeps you low and mobile, and your tracker reads the landscape for fresh tracks and movement.

After the drive, you'll have lunch in Udawalawe before returning to your hotel. An optional visit to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home is available if you want to see rescued elephants in care: entrance to the orphanage is not included in the tour price and is booked separately at checkout. The full day runs about ten hours from pickup to drop-off, with the park itself taking the morning and early afternoon.
