The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Galle hotel and heads inland toward Udawalawe National Park. The park sits between the two destinations, so the safari becomes the centerpiece of the transfer rather than a detour. You spend roughly 4 hours on a game drive in a private jeep with a wildlife tracker who knows where to find the animals. Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka's most reliable spots for elephants, and the park also holds sloth bears, sambar deer, wild boar, water buffalo, junglefowl and crocodiles. Leopards are rare but possible.
After the safari, you stop for lunch in Udawalawe. If you want to visit the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a facility caring for orphaned elephants, that's an optional add-on you can arrange at checkout. The rest of the drive then continues to Ella, arriving in the late afternoon. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and you get bottled water and refreshments during the game drive. If you'd rather start from Unawatuna, Mirissa or Koggala instead of Galle, or if you need to be dropped somewhere other than Ella after the safari, those changes can be arranged. Any variation in distance from the park may affect the final price.
