experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me as we walked through the old stone gate of Galle Fort was the salty breeze—mixed with a faint whiff of cinnamon from a nearby spice shop. Our guide, Priyantha, started off with stories about Portuguese walls and Dutch ramparts. You could almost hear the echo of old footsteps on those uneven cobblestones. We paused at a lookout spot where the Indian Ocean just sprawls out in front of you—fishing boats bobbing in the distance, kids chasing each other along the ramparts.

Inside the Dutch Reformed Church, it felt cool and quiet. The wooden pews creaked under us as Priyantha pointed out gravestones set right into the floor—some dating back to the 1700s. There’s a musty scent inside, mixed with candle wax. Not far from there, we ducked into the Galle National Museum. It’s small but packed with oddities: colonial coins, old maps, even a faded British uniform behind glass. I learned more about cinnamon trade here than I ever did in school.

Lunch was at a tiny café tucked behind a row of souvenir stalls—rice and curry served on banana leaves, spicy enough to make my nose run (in a good way). Afterward, we wandered through local markets where vendors called out in Sinhala and English—selling everything from fresh mangoes to handwoven bags. The colors were wild; so were the smells. Later in the afternoon, we drove down to Unawatuna Beach. The sand was warm underfoot and there was this lazy hum of reggae music drifting from a beach bar. Some folks swam; I just sat back and watched fishermen haul in their nets as the sun started dipping low.
