The Experience
The tuk-tuk picks you up from your hotel and heads straight to Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO site where you walk the ramparts and colonial streets at your own pace. From there, the route moves to the stilt fishermen near Habaraduwa—men balanced on wooden poles driven into the seabed, casting nets in the shallow water. It's a working fishing method, not a performance, and the light and angle shift constantly as you photograph. The driver knows the timing and the best vantage points.
Next comes the boat safari on Koggala Lake. You board a small vessel and travel through mangrove channels to Cinnamon Island, where families still peel and dry cinnamon bark using methods passed down for generations. You walk through the cultivation area, see the drying racks, and can buy cinnamon products directly. On the return, the boat stops for a fish massage—small fish nibble dead skin from your feet in the shallow water. It's an optional moment, and the ride itself across the open lake is the main event.
The tour includes stops at a traditional jewelry workshop, a spice and herbal garden, the Dutch Market (a 300-year-old colonial building with fresh produce, exotic fruits, and local vendors), and a Hindu temple and Christian church.
