The experience

The day starts at Galle Fort, a World Heritage site built first by the Portuguese in 1588 and then extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onward. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural monument that UNESCO recognized in 1988. You walk the fort's perimeter and interior with your guide, who explains the layers of its construction and what each phase meant for the region.

From there the route moves through several stops that fill out the picture of the Galle district. A turtle sanctuary houses rescued and baby turtles. You see four species there. Unawatuna, a coastal town nearby, is known for its beach and corals. It is one of the best places for snorkeling and diving if you want to spend time in the water. The temple with the 50-meter seated Buddha, the largest in Sri Lanka, sits inland. Before you reach the statue you pass through a hall of life-sized models depicting demons and sinners, which many visitors find striking. Coconut Tree Hill, a 50-meter rise lined with palm trees, overlooks Mirissa Bay and the Indian Ocean. It is a known spot for sunrise and sunset views.

The tour ends at a tea plantation in the hills above Koggala. The estate offers free, detailed tours of how they produce over 25 varieties of tea, including Virgin White tea. A delicate brew made from the tiniest and newest leaves. Workers here pick only 150 grams of Virgin White leaves in a day, compared to 23 kilograms of black tea at larger plantations. You sample the tea and learn the process before the drive back to your hotel.
