The experience
Galle Fort sits on the southwest coast where three colonial powers left their mark: the Portuguese built it in 1588, the Dutch fortified it extensively in 1668, and the British expanded it again in 1796. Today it's a working town of 272 families inside 52 hectares of stone walls, with a national museum, Dutch hospital, marine museum, clock tower and church all standing as evidence of that layered history. Your guide (government-qualified and speaking English) walks you through the bastions and explains what each era added.
The tour branches out from the fort to sites around Galle. You'll stop at a sea turtle sanctuary, a nonprofit that has released over 100,000 turtles back to sea and cares for injured ones. You get to learn about the seven species and release some yourself. You'll watch stilt fishermen at work: men perched on wooden crossbars fixed in the sand a few meters offshore, casting lines from that high vantage point. The approach looks ancient because it is, and some fishermen will show you how they fish and talk about their lives. Then you head to Handunugoda, a low-country tea estate where the tour is free and includes a walk through the plantation to see the tea varieties growing, a break with tea and chocolate cake, and a tasting session of each tea the estate produces.
The day runs 6 to 10 hours depending on how long you spend at each stop. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi on board and bottled water. Pickup is included. The route also passes Jungle Beach on Rumassala, known for its panoramic view of Galle Bay, and a hidden sandy beach popular for swimming.

Top questions
What is inside Galle Fort that I'll actually see?
Galle Fort holds 14 bastions, a national museum, a Dutch hospital, a marine museum, a working lighthouse, a clock tower and a church: all part of the living monument. The fort is 52 hectares with 272 families still living inside the walls, so you're walking through an active town, not a ruin.
Can I release sea turtles myself at the sanctuary?
Yes. The sea turtle sanctuary is a nonprofit that has released over 100,000 turtles to sea. You'll learn about the seven species of sea turtles and have the chance to release some yourself. Injured turtles get a second chance at life there.
What happens at the tea estate?
Handunugoda is a low-country tea plantation where the tour is free. You walk through the plantation to see the tea varieties, take a break with tea and chocolate cake, and end with a tasting session of each tea the estate produces.
How does stilt fishing work, and will I see it in action?
Stilt fishermen sit on a wooden crossbar tied to a vertical pole fixed in the sand a few meters offshore. From that high position they cast lines and wait for fish. Some fishermen are happy to show you how they fish and talk about their lives.
What's included in the price?
Private transportation, WiFi on board, bottled water and an air-conditioned vehicle are included, plus pickup from your hotel. The tea estate tour and tasting are also part of the day.
