Galle Fort cycling tour: UNESCO fortress on two wheels
The fort's sea walls and streets are built for bikes, not cars.
A 3–4-hour guided cycling tour of Galle's UNESCO World Heritage fortress and surrounding city on either a traditional or electric bike, led by a local guide in small groups of up to six riders. You arrive 20–30 minutes early for bike fitting and safety training. The tour covers the Old Town's colonial landmarks—the clock tower, lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church and All Saints Anglican Church—and follows a seaside path through Dewata beach. Choose between a manual bike or a Retro e-bike; both groups ride separately with their own guide.

The Experience
The tour starts with a safety briefing and bike setup at the meeting point, where you'll spend 20–30 minutes getting fitted and trained before the ride begins. If you pick the e-bike, the supervised training covers how to handle the electric assist on Galle's mix of flat and gentle slopes. Once you're ready, the ride unfolds along the coast and through the Old Town's narrow streets, which open onto the fortress walls and sea views that make cycling here different from riding through a typical city.
Your guide leads you to the 1882 clock tower and the 1939 lighthouse, both landmarks built into the fort's structure. You'll pass the Dutch Reformed Church, its historic belfry dating to 1707, and All Saints Anglican Church from 1871—both still standing inside the fortress. The route includes Dewata beach, where the coast flattens and the pace slows. The fort itself, built by Portuguese colonizers in the 16th century and later expanded by the Dutch, is the largest remaining European fortress in Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage site; riding its perimeter and through its streets gives you the scale of it in a way walking alone would not.
The tour ends back at the meeting point or at Galle Fort, depending on the route. Helmets, safety vests and bottled water are included. Groups stay small—maximum six riders—and traditional bike and e-bike groups ride separately so each can move at its own pace.
