The experience

Your guide meets you at Bandaranayake International Airport and drives you through Negombo to settle in before a welcome dinner. The next morning you leave for Sigiriya, stopping at Dambulla Caves to walk among painted Buddhas and carved stone walls before reaching the Cultural Triangle. That evening, a quiet climb to Pidurangala monastery gives you an unobstructed view of Sigiriya Rock itself. The 5th-century fortress you'll ascend at dawn the next day. The climb takes you past ancient wall paintings, a mirror wall carved with Sanskrit, and massive stone lion paws guarding the final approach. The ruins and views from the summit anchor the whole trip.

Day four moves you toward Kandy with a stop at a spice garden where a local chef teaches you to make dhal, chicken curry, fried cashew coconut sambal and poppadoms: hands-on instruction in the kitchen, not a demonstration. Kandy itself holds the Temple of the Sacred Tooth, a religious shrine said to house Buddha's tooth, and in the evening you watch a cultural dance show with fire dancers. The next morning you can relax by the campsite pool before driving to Mirissa on the southwest coast, a beach town with world-class waves and sea turtles. On your final day, you board a boat at dawn to watch blue whales, killer whales, sharks and dolphins while eating breakfast at sea, then drive back to Colombo via Galle Fort: a walled city where Dutch, Portuguese and British colonial buildings still stand and locals dive from the cobbled streets into the ocean.
