The experience
The tour starts at Bandaranaike International Airport with a transfer to Negombo, a coastal town where you explore the lagoon, Dutch Canal and local fish market before your first overnight. From there you head inland to Sigiriya, stopping at Dambulla Cave Temple on the way, then climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress for the sunset. The next day brings Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's medieval capital, where you walk among royal palaces and ancient monuments before an afternoon jeep safari at Minneriya or Echo National Park to watch the elephant gathering.
Kandy follows as the last royal capital, with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and an evening Kandyan cultural dance performance. You then drive through tea plantations toward the hill country, passing Ramboda Falls and stopping at a tea factory to taste Ceylon tea, then settle into Nuwara Eliya near Gregory Lake. An early trek at Horton Plains takes you to World's End and Baker's Falls before you board the scenic train to Ella, a laid-back mountain town where you visit the Nine Arches Bridge, hike Little Adam's Peak and see Ravana Falls.
The final stretch moves you south to Yala National Park for an early morning jeep safari hunting leopards, elephants and birds, then down to the coast: Mirissa, Tangalle or Galle depending on your preference. You can join an optional whale-watching tour, walk the ramparts of Galle Fort (another UNESCO site), watch stilt fishermen in Weligama, and end with a Madu River boat safari through mangroves and a visit to the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project before your evening transfer back to the airport.
