The Experience
We were already halfway out of Seoul before I realized how much quieter the world can get—our minivan hummed along, and soon the city noise faded into green. Our guide, Jihoon, pointed out the Han River slipping past as we headed towards Nami Island. I’d seen photos, but stepping off the ferry onto those tree-lined paths was different—there’s this hush under the poplars that makes you want to walk slower. The air smelled like damp leaves and something sweet from a snack stall (I caved for hotteok, no regrets). Jihoon told us about “Winter Sonata” filming here; some folks in our group tried to recreate a scene but just ended up laughing at each other instead.
After wandering Nami Island (and honestly losing track of time by the water), we hopped back in for Petite France & the Italian Village. The buildings are almost too bright against the hills—pastel blues and yellows that look like they belong in a storybook. It’s kitschy but in a way that makes you smile. There was an older couple taking selfies by a blue window; I offered to help, and they insisted I join their photo—so now I have this random picture with strangers who felt like friends for five minutes. The Pinocchio statue is massive—almost comically so—and there are little puppet shows if you catch them at the right time. Jihoon explained how it’s all tied to Collodi’s original story; I didn’t expect to learn about Italian fairy tales in Korea, but here we are.
The weather turned a bit chilly by afternoon, so we ducked into one of the cafés for coffee (the kind that comes with a tiny biscuit). There’s something about sitting there with your hands around a warm cup, watching kids run between French-style houses while someone plays accordion music over speakers—it’s surreal but oddly comforting. On the way back to Seoul, everyone was quieter. Maybe tired or maybe just full from all those little moments—I still think about that first breath under Nami’s trees sometimes.
