Climb two via ferratas on the Grančišče wall with a guide and all the gear

Via ferrata climbing above the mountain village of Mojstrana in the Kranjska Gora region offers two secured routes on the Grančišče wall: Aljaževa route (easier, grade B) and Route of Mojstrana Squirrels (more demanding, grade C/D). Both climbs run 180 meters high and 250 meters long, ending at the summit with views of the Julian Alps and Karavanke mountains. A mountain guide leads the experience, provides all technical equipment, and arranges pickup from your accommodation. Children from age 7 are welcome. A minimum of two people per booking applies.

The Experience

What separates this from hiking is the wall itself. You're clipped into a steel cable anchored into the rock face, moving upward with your hands and feet on iron rungs, pegs and natural holds. The two routes start from the same short approach to the Grančišče wall, so you can see both before deciding which one suits your experience level. Aljaževa route, the family option, climbs at grade B and works for anyone new to rock. Route of Mojstrana Squirrels pushes harder at grade C/D, demanding real strength and technique from climbers who've done this before.

The guide handles the technical side: they fit your helmet, harness and self-belay system before you start, and they're with you the whole way up. The descent follows a marked trail almost back to where you began, so the full outing takes about three hours. From the top of Grančišče, you look out at the Julian Alps and Karavanke range: the payoff for the climb. Pickup and drop-off from your accommodation in Kranjska Gora or Mojstrana is included, so you don't arrange transport yourself.

The guide speaks English, Spanish or German, and can take children as young as 7 (minimum height 125 cm). All the climbing gear (helmet, belt, self-belay system) is provided and fits into the price. You do need to be comfortable with physical effort and have decent cardiovascular fitness. The climb is not a walk.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and German.

Can children come?

What's the difference between the two via ferratas on Grančišče?

Aljaževa route is grade B, 180 meters high and 250 meters long, designed for families and climbers new to rock. Route of Mojstrana Squirrels is grade C/D, the same height and length, but demands climbing skill and strength. It's for people with prior experience who want more challenge.

Do I need to bring my own climbing gear?

No. The guide provides helmet, harness and self-belay system, all included in the price. You just need to wear sturdy shoes and clothes that let you move freely.

How does the day work from start to finish?

The guide picks you up from your accommodation, drives you to Mojstrana, fits your gear at the Kofler Sports agency, then leads you up one of the two routes. The climb takes roughly three hours total, including the descent on a marked trail back to the starting point, then the drive back to your hotel.

Can my 7-year-old do this?
