Gripping steel cables, climbing iron rungs, signing your name at the summit

Mojstrana via ferrata is a half-day rock climbing activity from Bled where families scale a real limestone wall above an alpine village with a professional mountain guide, complete equipment and transport included. Children from age 6 and 120cm tall can climb. No prior experience is needed. The route is Grade B, 180 meters vertical and 250 meters long, and ends with a short hike back down and a walk past the nearby Slovenian Alpine Museum before returning to Bled.

  • Hike to via ferrata start
  • Climb via ferrata route with guide
  • Enjoy bird view of village
  • Return transport to Bled area

The Experience

You meet your guide in Bled or at your accommodation, then drive 15 minutes to Mojstrana village at the gateway to Triglav National Park. A short hike leads to the via ferrata on Grančišče hill, where the route climbs 180 meters of real limestone using steel cables and iron rungs bolted into the rock. Your IFMGA-certified guide teaches every child the technique before the first step and stays at their side throughout. You're always tied to the cable, so the safety is built in. The focus is on the climb itself and the moment each kid reaches the top and signs their name in the logbook.

The activity lasts around three hours altogether, mixing a short hike with the climbing. Two route options let you choose based on your family's comfort: an easier path for beginners or a more challenging one if someone in the group has climbing experience. The guide reads the conditions on the day and will advise if rain or storms close the route. All technical equipment is provided (harnesses, helmets, carabiners), so you bring only sturdy hiking shoes with grip (rentals are available at the office). Groups stay under six people, which means your guide can give each child real attention instead of managing a crowd.

The return includes transport back to Bled, and the village of Mojstrana is a short walk from the Slovenian Alpine Museum if your family wants to extend the afternoon. The activity runs May through October and suits all fitness levels. What matters is that kids meet the minimum age of 6 and height of 120cm, and that someone with a fear of heights thinks carefully before booking.

Is this one for you? This is a private tour, so your family climbs with one guide and no other groups, which means the guide can pace the day around each child's confidence and speed. The small group size, maximum six people, is what makes real attention possible instead of herding. Book this if your kids need a guide who watches them, not one managing a crowd.

Top questions

Can children come?

13 to 17 years; 4 to 12 years; under 4.

What's the Aljaževa via ferrata route actually like for a six-year-old?

The Aljaževa route is Grade B, 180 meters of vertical climbing on real limestone with steel cables and iron rungs. Children from age 6 and 120cm tall can do it with an IFMGA guide teaching them the technique before they start. You're always tied to the cable, so the safety structure is there. The guide's job is to keep them moving and confident, not to rescue them.

Do we need climbing experience or special fitness to do this?

No climbing experience is needed, and the activity suits all fitness levels. Your guide teaches everything before the first step. What matters is that children meet the age and height minimums, wear sturdy hiking shoes with grip, and feel comfortable being tied to a cable on a vertical wall.

How long does the whole thing take from Bled?

The activity lasts around three hours altogether, including the 15-minute drive from Bled to Mojstrana, a short hike to the via ferrata, the climb itself, and the return drive. You can choose a morning or afternoon start by agreement with your guide.

What happens if the weather turns bad on the day?

The route may close in rain or storms. Your guide will advise on the day whether it's safe to climb. If conditions aren't right, you'll know before you start the technical part.

Is there anything to do in Mojstrana after we finish climbing?

The Slovenian Alpine Museum is a short walk from the start of the via ferrata, so many families add it to the afternoon. Mojstrana sits at the gateway to Triglav National Park, so the setting itself is part of the day.

What equipment do we need to bring, and what's provided?

Your guide provides all technical equipment: harness, helmet, carabiners and the connection to the steel cable. You need sturdy hiking shoes with grip for the whole family. Rentals are available at the office. Wear comfortable clothes for the activity. Food and drinks are not included.
