You climb inside a gorge, not up a wall, with waterfalls roaring below and the Martuljek peaks towering above.
Via Ferrata Hvadnik is a half-day rock climb through a limestone canyon above Gozd Martuljek in the Julian Alps, starting from Bled. You ascend 250 meters inside an enclosed gorge, cross the Hvadnik stream three times on iron rungs and suspension bridges, and emerge to views of Špik and the Martuljek mountain group. An IFMGA-certified guide provides all equipment, safety briefing and technique coaching. No climbing experience is required. The route is Grade B/C, accessible to anyone with moderate fitness.
The Experience
Most via ferratas in the Julian Alps take you up an exposed rock face. This one takes you through a canyon: enclosed limestone walls, natural shade, the roar of waterfalls and the spray of water as you cross the stream three times. That water is the difference. You hear it, feel it, may get wet. It's the kind of sensory detail that stays with you in a way a dry rock climb simply doesn't.
The route climbs 250 meters over roughly 500 meters of distance, Grade B/C difficulty: a step up from a beginner ferrata but well within reach for anyone with reasonable fitness and a willingness to move on vertical rock. Your guide fits your harness and helmet, runs through the safety briefing and technique coaching before you start, then leads you through the gorge. The enclosed canyon walls make every move feel immersive. The suspension bridges add a moment of real exposure. In summer heat, when Bled sits at 30°C, the gorge stays cool. You'll be back in town in time for lunch.
Return transport from Bled is included, along with the full via ferrata set (harness, helmet, lanyards), and an English-speaking guide. Children from age 8 are welcome. The route suits anyone with moderate cardiovascular fitness. If you have concerns about your health or stamina, check with the operator before booking.

Is this one for you?The route demands moderate fitness and comfort on vertical rock with exposure. The enclosed gorge and stream crossings mean you'll move deliberately and deliberately get wet, so this suits climbers who want immersion and sensory detail over speed or dry rock.

What makes Hvadnik Gorge different from other via ferratas near Bled?
Hvadnik is the only via ferrata in the Julian Alps that takes you through a gorge instead of up an exposed rock face. You climb inside enclosed canyon walls with waterfalls and a stream you cross three times, creating a completely different atmosphere and sensory experience than the open ridgeline ferratas at Mojstrana, Mala Mojstrovka or Mangart.
Do I need climbing experience to do this via ferrata?
No experience is required. Your IFMGA-certified guide handles equipment fitting, runs a full safety briefing and teaches you technique before you start climbing. The route is Grade B/C, a step up from beginner level, but accessible to anyone with moderate fitness and a sense of adventure.
How long does the whole experience take from Bled?
The activity itself is roughly three hours. Return transport from Bled is included, so factor in travel time to and from Gozd Martuljek. The operator will confirm the full timeline when you book.
What's the view like at the top of Hvadnik?
The Martuljek mountain group dominates the skyline: jagged, dramatic peaks with the spiky silhouette of Špik towering overhead. These peaks look visually different from the Triglav massif most tourists see in the Julian Alps, and the views feel undiscovered.
Will I get wet crossing the stream?
You cross the Hvadnik stream three times on iron rungs and suspension bridges. You'll definitely feel the spray from the waterfalls and may get wet depending on water levels and how you move. Bring a change of clothes or a dry bag for your phone and valuables.
