The summit sits above 2,000 meters yet needs no mountaineering skill to reach.

Hike Debela Peč, a 2,014-meter peak in Slovenia's Julian Alps near Bled, with a certified mountain guide leading a small group through spruce forest and alpine meadow to an open summit with 360-degree views. Hotel pickup, National Park fees and transport in an air-conditioned van are included. The guide speaks English and leads no more than 8 hikers at once. Food and drinks at the midway mountain hut are your own expense.

The Experience

The hike starts with pickup from your Bled accommodation at 8:00 AM and a 30-minute drive to the Pokljuka plateau. From the Medvedova Konta car park, the trail climbs through dense spruce forest for around 45 minutes before opening onto Planina Lipanca, an alpine meadow at 1,630 meters where the Lipanca mountain hut sits among traditional Slovenian farm buildings. This is where most hikers stop to buy local food and drinks before the steeper final push.

From Lipanca, the route narrows through larch forest and rocky terrain to the summit at 2,014 meters. The full 360-degree panorama spreads across Triglav and the Julian Alps to the north and west, the Karavanke Ridge marking the Austrian border to the east, and on clear days Lake Bled to the south. The descent retraces the same route, covering roughly 10 kilometers with 700 meters of elevation gain over approximately 3 hours of hiking. You're back in Bled by early afternoon.

Sturdy ankle-support hiking boots are essential: trail shoes or sneakers won't grip the rocky summit terrain. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person, layers for the significantly cooler temperatures at altitude, sunscreen and sunglasses even on cloudy days, and a light rain jacket since mountain weather shifts fast. The guide is a certified professional leading the group at a steady pace suited to active beginners and families with moderate fitness.

Top questions

Can children come?

4 to 17 years; under 4.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24h before the start.

What's the hike like between the car park and the Lipanca hut?

The first 45 minutes climbs through dense spruce forest on a steady trail to Planina Lipanca, an open alpine meadow at 1,630 meters where traditional farm buildings and the mountain hut come into view. The terrain is forested and shaded for most of this section.

How much harder does the trail get after Lipanca?

The route steepens noticeably from Lipanca onward, moving through larch forest and then onto open rocky ground as it approaches the summit. The final push to 2,014 meters is the most demanding part of the day, but it's still manageable for active beginners with moderate fitness.

Can I see Lake Bled from the top?

On clear days, Lake Bled is visible to the south as part of the full 360-degree panorama from the summit. Triglav and the Julian Alps dominate the north and west, and the Karavanke Ridge runs along the eastern horizon toward Austria.

What should I eat and drink during the hike?

The Lipanca mountain hut midway offers local food and drinks for purchase, which is where most hikers refuel before the final climb. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water from the start, as there are no facilities on the upper trail or at the summit.

Do I need mountaineering experience or special gear?

No prior mountaineering experience is needed. Sturdy ankle-support hiking boots are essential for the rocky summit, and you'll need weather-appropriate layers, sunscreen, sunglasses and a light rain jacket, but no ropes, crampons or technical equipment.
