The Experience

What makes this different from ground-level sightseeing is the vantage point itself. You rise above Lake Bled strapped into a harness beside your pilot, watching the island and castle shrink below you as the thermal currents carry you higher into the alpine air. The flight usually lasts between 10 and 30 minutes depending on wind and lift, but the whole experience (pickup, drive to the plateau, equipment prep, briefing and landing) takes about two hours from start to finish.

The pilot handles everything. After the 15 minute drive from Bled through the countryside to the take-off point on the Pokljuka plateau, your pilot prepares the paraglider wing while you stand on the hill taking in the view. The safety briefing and equipment check happen on the ground. The pilot secures your harness, walks you through what to expect, and gives you the signal to run. Once airborne, you're a passenger in the truest sense: the pilot controls the wing, reads the thermals and decides the flight path. If conditions allow and you're game for it, the pilot can add some aerial maneuvers. Landing happens near the lake, where the driver picks you up and brings you back.

Weather is the only wildcard. Paragliding depends on wind direction and thermal conditions, so the operator confirms your exact time slot two days before your flight, usually somewhere between 10am and 1:30pm. If the wind shifts or conditions turn unsafe, the flight gets postponed to another date or time slot at no extra cost. Wear comfortable clothes and sports shoes. It's cooler up in the air than on the ground, and you'll want something you can move freely in for the takeoff run.
