You make the chocolate, you take it home
A 90-minute guided chocolate class in Edinburgh where you make your own Scottish-themed bar to take away, learn how cacao beans become chocolate, and taste over 30 varieties from Scottish and international makers. The experience runs daily for ages 6 and up, with a live guide in English and vegan or milk-free options available.
Step-by-step itinerary
Chocolate tour and tasting experience
- Discover chocolate tree to bar process
- Make your own Scottish-themed chocolate
- Taste over 30 chocolate varieties
- Wrap chocolates to take home
The Experience
You start by seeing and touching actual cacao pods, then follow the journey from bean to bar. The guide walks you through how chocolate is made, and you get hands-on time crafting your own bar — you can shape it as a Greyfriar's Bobby, a Nessie, an Edinburgh Castle, or your own design. Chocolate samples come throughout, so you're tasting as you learn.
Once your bar is made, you move into the tasting room where the real choice begins. There are over 30 chocolates to sample: Scottish makers sit alongside Japanese, chilli, gin, and haggis varieties. You pick what you want to take home, wrap it up, and leave with both the bar you made and whatever else caught your taste. The whole thing runs 90 minutes, and the guide is there the whole way.
Vegan and milk-free options are available throughout, so dietary needs don't mean sitting out. The Chocolatarium is in Edinburgh's historic old town near Stockbridge Market, and public transport gets you there easily. It's built for anyone from age 6 up, no fitness level required.

Can I really make my own chocolate bar to take home?
Yes. You make your own bar during the class and wrap it to take away at the end. You choose the shape — Greyfriar's Bobby, Nessie, Edinburgh Castle, or your own design — and it's yours to keep or give as a gift.
How many different chocolates are there to taste?
Over 30 varieties. The selection includes Scottish makers, Japanese chocolate, chilli, gin, haggis, and many others. You taste as you go and choose which ones to take home with you.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, for ages 6 and up. The class is fully guided and hands-on, so children make their own chocolate and taste alongside adults. Children under 6 are not permitted.
How long does the whole experience take?
The class runs 90 minutes from start to finish, including making your bar, learning about chocolate, tasting, and wrapping your selections.
Are there options for people who can't eat regular chocolate?
Vegan and milk-free chocolate options are available throughout the experience, so you can still make and taste without dietary conflict.
