The Experience

"You'll taste the difference between them before you leave," our driver said as we pulled out of Edinburgh toward the Perthshire hills. He wasn't wrong. The whisky tour takes you to Dewar's Aberfeldy first—a distillery that's been running since 1898—where you spend two hours walking through the production floor, the warehouse, and an interactive heritage exhibition before tasting their 12-year-old single malt. The place still feels like a working operation, not a museum. You see the copper stills, smell the grain, and then sit down with a proper dram in hand.

Between the two distilleries, there's a lunch stop in Aberfeldy village itself. It's a small Highland town with enough time to wander the streets, grab food at a local spot, and shake off the first tasting before heading to Glenturret. The drive passes the South Queensferry Bridges—you'll stop for photos there—and the landscape shifts from lowland to proper hill country as you move north.

Glenturret is different. It's Scotland's oldest working distillery, and they still use the last hand-operated mash tun left in the country. The whisky tasting here is the final stop, and by then you understand why the driver's comment made sense: the two distilleries have distinct characters. The whole day runs in an air-conditioned vehicle with live commentary from someone who knows the region. Neither distillery admission is included in the tour price, so you'll pay separately when you arrive, but the transport, timing, and route are all handled.
