The experience

The day starts with a pass by Linlithgow Palace's ruins before heading into the heartland. Stirling Castle, beautifully restored, anchors the morning, from its ramparts you see across to the National Wallace Monument, the two landmarks framing the region's medieval power. The drive then cuts through the Trossachs toward Aberfoyle, a landscape of lochs and mountains the locals call the Highlands in Miniature, passing Lochs Venachar and Achray and climbing the Duke's Pass for views that open up the whole geography at once.

At Loch Lomond, the guide leads a short walk to a Highland viewpoint overlooking Scotland's largest lake and the Arrochar Alps.
