The Experience
"That’s where Mary Queen of Scots was crowned," our guide Jamie said, pointing up at the stone walls of Stirling Castle as we stepped off the minibus. I could smell the rain on old stone—Scotland’s version of perfume, I guess. We’d left Edinburgh just after breakfast, twelve of us packed into a mini-coach that still somehow felt cozy. Linlithgow Palace flashed by through streaky windows, and I tried (and failed) to snap a photo before it disappeared behind trees. Should’ve been quicker.
I didn’t expect the drive to feel like such an adventure itself. The Trossachs—Jamie called them “the Highlands in miniature”—were all mossy woods and sudden flashes of water. At one point we stopped for a short walk near Loch Lomond. The air was sharp and peaty, and someone’s dog barked in the distance while Jamie explained how you can actually see the line between Highlands and Lowlands here. I’m not sure I saw it exactly, but I did feel something shift—maybe just the wind picking up or maybe something older in these hills.
The whisky tour at Glengoyne Distillery was warmer than expected (literally—the still room is like a sauna), and tasting that 12-year-old single malt felt like swallowing a bit of history. Our group got pretty chatty after that; even Li from Singapore started joking about “wee drams.” On the way back we swung by Doune Castle—Monty Python fans were quoting lines under their breath—and I realized how much ground we’d covered in just one day trip from Edinburgh. Still thinking about those views over Loch Lomond though… they stick with you.
