The Experience

We’d barely left Edinburgh when those massive horse heads — The Kelpies — suddenly loomed up out of the morning mist. Our guide, Jamie, just grinned and said, “Wait till you see them up close.” And yeah, standing right under their steel jaws was a bit surreal. I could smell wet grass and something metallic in the air. Jamie told us about how they’re a nod to Scotland’s old workhorses and its industrial grit. I tried to take a selfie but ended up with half my face and a lot of horse nostril. So that’s how it started.

The drive west felt like flipping through postcards — rolling fields, sheep looking totally unbothered by our little bus trundling past. By the time we reached Loch Lomond, the sky had cleared just enough for sunlight to hit the water in these quick silver flashes. At Balmaha, we wandered down a muddy path (my shoes still haven’t forgiven me) and Jamie pointed out Ben Lomond across the loch. There was this quiet moment where nobody really said much; just wind in the trees and some distant bird calls. I get why there’s a song about this place now.

After lunch (I grabbed a sandwich from a tiny shop — not fancy but hit the spot), we rolled into Stirling. The castle sits up there like it owns everything around it. Inside was all stone corridors and echoes; outside, views that made me stop mid-sentence more than once. Jamie told stories about Mary Queen of Scots being crowned here and battles that decided whole chapters of history — honestly, I didn’t expect to care so much about old stones but somehow I did. If castles aren’t your thing, you can wander Stirling town instead (someone from our group found an amazing bakery). Still thinking about those views from the ramparts though.
