The Experience
You open your eyes and there’s this sharp, chilly air coming off the Forth as we step out near Dunfermline Abbey. Our guide, Jamie, was already cracking a joke about Robert the Bruce’s heart being buried somewhere else (I’m still not sure if he was serious). The stone here feels cold even through gloves — it’s strange to stand where kings actually stood. You can smell damp earth and something sweet from a bakery across the street. We couldn’t go inside since it was Monday, but just walking around those old gravestones felt heavy, in a good way.
The drive to Stirling Castle wasn’t long — maybe 40 minutes? — but the landscape outside kept changing. Sheep everywhere, of course. At Stirling, you really get why they built castles on hills; the wind nearly took my hat off when I leaned over the wall for that view. Jamie pointed out where William Wallace fought (“right down there,” he said, waving his sandwich for emphasis). Inside the castle walls it smelled of old wood and stone dust. I tried to picture all those coronations and sieges but mostly just felt small under those high ceilings.
Rosslyn Chapel came last. It’s smaller than I expected, but every inch is covered in carvings — angels, vines, things I probably missed even after staring too long. There’s this faint candle smell mixed with cold air inside. Our guide told us about the Knights Templar stuff and Da Vinci Code stories; Li laughed when I tried to say “Rosslyn” in Scots (“just say ‘rose-lin’, not ‘ross-lynn’!”). I kept thinking about all the secrets people believe are hidden here. We left as the light started fading — it made everything look softer somehow.
