  • Explore Purple Island and mangroves
  • Tour Zubarah Fort historic site
  • Visit abandoned Al Jumail village

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel or airport, then heads north toward Al Khor, a coastal city 50 kilometers from Doha. Al Khor Harbor is the first stop—a working port where fishermen still operate, a remnant of the pearl and fishing industries that once anchored the region's economy. From there, you move inland to Al Thakira, a natural expanse of mangroves and waterways that cuts through the desert. The landscape shifts from urban to wild in a single drive.

Purple Island (Al Khor Island) sits about an hour from Doha and connects to the mainland by a narrow path broken at intervals to let water flow toward the mangrove forest. You walk across this path to reach the island itself, moving through the channels where the mangroves grow. The fort comes next: Zubarah Fort, built in 1938 under Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, holds artifacts and stands as a site of significance in Qatari military and cultural history. The tour also includes Al Jumail, an abandoned pearling and fishing village founded in the 19th century and inhabited into the 20th, before petroleum and gas reshaped the economy. The name comes from the Arabic word for "beautiful," a reference to the trees that grow year-round in the area.

Bottled water, tea or coffee, and an air-conditioned vehicle are included throughout. The guide reaches out before pickup to confirm timing; the tour begins when the driver arrives at your location. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available. The group stays small—a maximum of six travelers—and the pace suits all fitness levels.
