The Experience
Your day starts with hotel pickup and a drive through Doha's landmarks: the Corniche, a palm-lined promenade curving around the bay; Katara Cultural Village, where theaters, galleries and concert halls sit inside Qatar's largest cultural project; and Pearl Island, a 400-hectare man-made development styled on a Mediterranean riviera. You'll also walk through Souq Waqif, the traditional marketplace where small shops sell spices, perfumes and handicrafts along narrow alleys, and stop at the Museum of Islamic Art, a world-class institution housed in a building designed by the architect who created the Louvre Pyramid.
The second half of the tour heads north to Al Khor, about 50 kilometers from Doha, where the real story of Qatar's past unfolds. Al Khor was once the country's pearling center before cultured pearls made the industry obsolete. You'll see the scenic harbor lined with traditional fishing dhows and walk through mangrove colonies—a natural habitat for birds and fish that also protects the coastline from erosion. Your guide explains how pearling and fishing shaped the region for centuries.
The tour finishes at Al Zubara Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site in northwestern Qatar built beside the ruins of an ancient fort. Archaeologists led by the Qatar Museums Authority have excavated artifacts from the time when Al Zubara was a thriving port for trade, fishing and pearling, and many of these pieces are now displayed inside the renovated fort. The whole day runs seven to eight hours and includes bottled water, tea or coffee, and transport in an air-conditioned 4x4 Land Cruiser.

What was Al Khor's role in Qatar's history?
Al Khor, located 50 kilometers north of Doha, was the center of Qatar's pearling industry before cultured pearls made traditional diving obsolete. The harbor still holds traditional fishing dhows, and a museum there documents the pearling, fishing and dhow-building trades that sustained the region for centuries.
Can I book this tour as a private group or do I have to join other travelers?
You can choose between a private tour for your group or a group tour with other travelers. Both options include the same stops, guide and transport; the difference is whether you travel with just your party or share the vehicle with others.
What is Al Zubara Fort and why is it significant?
Al Zubara Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northwestern Qatar built beside the ruins of an ancient fort that was once a flourishing port for trade, fishing and pearling. International archaeologists have uncovered artifacts spanning centuries of the region's commercial and maritime history, and many are displayed inside the renovated fort.
What does the tour include besides the stops?
The tour includes hotel pickup, transport in an air-conditioned 4x4 Land Cruiser, bottled water, and tea or coffee. Your guide speaks English and leads the group through all the stops over seven to eight hours.
Are the mangroves something I walk through, or do I just see them from the vehicle?
You visit the mangrove colonies at Al Thakira as part of the northern section of the tour. The mangroves are a natural habitat for birds and fish and also protect the coastline from erosion; they're a major tourism attraction in Qatar and part of the day's exploration of the country's natural and cultural heritage.
Is this tour suitable if I'm not in great physical shape?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You spend most of the day in the air-conditioned vehicle moving between stops, and the walking at each site is at a relaxed pace with your guide.
