Step-by-step itinerary

Explore North Qatar's culture and heritage

  • Visit Al Khor harbor and museum
  • Walk and kayak at Purple Island mangroves
  • Tour Al Zubarah Fort archaeological site
  • See site-specific desert artwork

The Experience

The tour starts at Al Khor, a harbor town 50 kilometres north of Doha that predates the capital but never grew to its size. This was Qatar's pearling center before cultured pearls ended the trade, and the corniche still holds traditional fishing dhows. You'll see the mangrove colonies that line the water and visit a museum documenting the pearling, fishing and dhow-building industries that once sustained the region. From there, the route moves to Al Thakira, where you can walk among the mangroves on the Purple Island—a quieter stretch of coast where kayaking and family picnics are options if time allows.

The centerpiece is Zubara Fort, built beside the ruins of an ancient settlement on Qatar's northwestern edge. Al-Zubarah was once a thriving port for trade, fishing and pearling; today it's a protected archaeological landscape and the country's first UNESCO World Heritage site. An international team led by the Qatar Museums Authority continues excavations on the grounds, and the fort itself has been renovated to display artifacts recovered from the digs. The site shows what the coast looked like before oil transformed the peninsula.

The final stop is a traditional Qatari village at Al Shamal with houses built from limestone and mud—the construction method used before concrete and air conditioning. On clear days, you can see Bahrain across the water from this northern point. The guide handles the route and timing; the vehicle is air-conditioned and includes bottled water and coffee or tea. Hotel pickup is part of the booking, so the morning begins without arranging your own transport north.

Is this one for you?Choose the group tour if you're comfortable sharing the vehicle and want to meet other travelers; book the private option if you prefer a dedicated guide and flexible pacing through the four stops. Both follow the same route and include the same sites—the difference is who else is in the vehicle and how much control you have over timing at each stop.
