The Experience

The tour starts at Al Khor, a coastal city 50 kilometers north of Doha that was once the country's center for pearl diving and fishing. You'll see the old harbor and the ship repairing yard where vessels were renovated in centuries past, then move inland to Al Thakhira mangrove forest. This is one of Qatar's oldest and largest forests, spreading across roughly 1,392 hectares along the coastline between Al Thakhira and Al Khor City—the most densely populated mangrove habitat in the country. The forest sits close to the water, and walking through it gives a sense of how the landscape sustained the communities that depended on the sea.

Al Zubara Fort is the centerpiece of the day. Built in 1938 under Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, it's a 20th-century military fortress and part of the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site, a UNESCO World Heritage location. The fort's one-meter-thick walls were designed to keep invaders out and rooms cool during Qatar's hot summers. It stands as a pristine example of Arab military architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, and the site is built for visitors interested in how Qatar's defense and daily life worked during that period.

The tour also includes Al Jumail, a small traditional village on Qatar's northwest coast. Founded by the Al Kubaisi family in the early nineteenth century, it remained inhabited until the mid-twentieth century and now serves as a weekend destination for local families reconnecting with their heritage. The village holds a small mosque with its minaret still standing, along with other traditional buildings that mark its history.
