The experience

The Museum of Islamic Art sits on an artificial island off the Corniche: a world-class building designed by I. M. Pei that holds masterpieces spanning 13 centuries and three continents. From there, the tour moves into Souq Waqif, where the maze of small shops sells everything from spices and perfumes to jewellery and handicrafts, and traditional music and cultural shows fill the alleys. The guide walks you through both, so you get the story behind what you're seeing instead of just wandering.

The Corniche itself is a 10km palm-fringed promenade curving around Doha Bay: lined with parks, government buildings and museums where people stroll to watch the city lights reflect off the water. You'll see Katara Cultural Village, a sprawling complex of theatres, concert halls and galleries built to showcase world cultures, and The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made island development covering 400 hectares that's become the region's most exclusive address. West Bay's skyline of modern skyscrapers closes out the city's transformation from a fishing village to a contemporary metropolis.
