The Experience

You're picked up from San Juan and driven to Fajardo, where the boat leaves at either 7:30am (Vieques) or 1:30pm (Icacos). The 35- to 45-minute cruise gets you to the island, and once you arrive, the crew walks you through snorkeling—where you go, how to use the gear, what to watch for. Vieques mornings are built around spotting sea turtles and the reef life that congregates there; Icacos afternoons put you in turquoise water off a white sand beach. Either way, you're in the water with a guide keeping an eye on your level and pointing out what swims past.

Back on the boat, the bar opens and lunch comes out: cold cut and chicken salad sandwiches, pasta salad, grain salad, fruit, cookies, local chips, soft drinks and Puerto Rican rum drinks. The crew stays available to talk about the islands' history and the water around you. The giant waterslide is there for the afternoon—a break between snorkeling and the ride back to Fajardo. Snorkeling gear (mask, fins, tube) and safety belts are provided; you bring swimwear, sunscreen without Oxybenzone, and a towel. The boat has a half bathroom and the marina has showers and free parking.

Transportation from San Juan to Fajardo is optional at checkout. If you book it, the driver calls the day before to confirm your pickup location and time. The tour requires a minimum of 15 passengers to run; if that number isn't met one to two days before, you'll be offered an alternative date or a full refund. Children must be at least 6 years old.
