The Experience
“You’ll want to try the piña colada before you even get in the water,” our captain grinned as we boarded the Traveler Catamaran at Villa Marina. He had these big, sun-creased hands and laughed like he’d been doing this run forever. The boat felt bigger than I expected—50 feet is no joke—but it was the hum of everyone’s chatter that made me realize how early it still was. I remember the salt in the air mixing with sunscreen and something sweet from the bar, probably that famous piña colada.
The ride out to Icacos Island took about 50 minutes, but honestly, time slipped away. Our guide, Carla, pointed out little cays along the way—she told us stories about fishermen who used to camp out here for days. At some point I just stared at the water changing colors under us—blue then green then almost clear near Icacos. When we finally anchored, there was this sudden quiet except for waves slapping against the hull and someone’s kid giggling about fish “with eyebrows.” I didn’t expect to laugh so much before even getting in the water.
Snorkeling off Icacos was wild—I mean, I’m not a pro swimmer or anything but Carla handed me a mask and just said “relax, you’ll see more if you float.” She was right. There were these tiny yellow fish darting around coral that looked like old bones. At one point I tasted saltwater through my snorkel because I got too excited trying to follow a blue tang (those things are fast). Back on board, lunch was this deli-style buffet—nothing fancy but after swimming it tasted perfect. The bean salad had cilantro in it and for some reason that stuck with me all afternoon.
After lunch we moved closer to a coral reef spot where people lined up for the water slide off the side of the catamaran. I chickened out at first but ended up going twice because why not? The sun felt heavy on my skin by then, but there was always cold water or rum punch nearby. Some folks just stretched out on deck and let themselves dry off while others went back in for another swim. It felt easy—no rush to do anything except maybe try another cookie before they disappeared.
