Icacos Island Catamaran from Fajardo: Snorkel & Beach Day
What happens when you sail past El Yunque and land on an island with no one else there?
You board a catamaran at Puerto del Rey marina and sail to Cayo Icacos, a protected island with no development. Snorkel gear, instruction, and floating devices are included; you explore two reefs, swim, and eat a buffet lunch on the boat with drinks. The return trip brings you back to the marina in the midafternoon, with hotel transport available if you booked it.

The Experience
The catamaran leaves Puerto del Rey marina in the morning, and you're on the water within minutes. If you booked hotel pickup, the driver collects you early enough to make the boarding time — check your confirmation for the exact window. As the boat cuts across the Caribbean, you can see the mountains of El Yunque rising behind Fajardo's coastline, and the crew starts pouring drinks: piña coladas, rum punch, whatever you want from the bar. It's the kind of thing that feels like it shouldn't be this easy, but it is.
After about an hour, the catamaran anchors at Cayo Icacos, part of La Cordillera Keys Nature Reserve. The island is quiet — no resorts, no crowds, just sand and water. Snorkel gear is on board (masks, fins, floating belts), and the crew can walk you through it if you've never done it before. The reef is close enough that you're in the water within minutes, spotting rays, octopuses, and fish moving through coral. If snorkeling isn't your thing, there's a water slide off the boat, or you can watch the reef through the glass windows without getting wet. Around midday, lunch comes out: a buffet with freshly baked bread, sliced meats, cheeses, pasta salad, chicken salad, coleslaw, fruit. You build your own sandwich and eat on deck.
After lunch, the boat heads to another reef for a second snorkel session. The water can get choppy depending on the day — the crew will tell you what to expect — but that's also why they have floating belts. The sail back takes an hour or so, and you're back at Puerto del Rey in the midafternoon. If you arranged hotel transport, the driver is waiting. The whole day is around six hours from start to finish, which is long enough to feel like you've actually left, but short enough that you're not exhausted by the time you're back on land.
