Canyoning in São Miguel is a half-day activity where you jump into freshwater pools, rappel down waterfalls and slide natural rock formations inside volcanic canyons led by certified guides. All equipment (wetsuit, harness, helmet, canyoning shoes) is provided, and the guide captures photos throughout. Small groups keep the experience personal, and no prior canyoning experience is needed. Children from age 6 can join with an adult.

The experience

After you meet your guides and gear up, you head into one of São Miguel's river canyons surrounded by dense forest and moss-covered rock. The canyon itself is only reachable by canyoning (no trail, no road), so the landscape stays wild and untouched. You'll jump into crystal-clear pools, slide down natural rock formations, and rappel down waterfalls as you move deeper into the Azorean wilderness. The guides lead you through each move, so beginners and families with children do this safely alongside people who've canyoned before.

The half-day format means three hours in the canyon, which is enough time to cover the main highlights without rushing or spending the whole day away from the rest of the island. Transport to and from the activity is optional at checkout. You can arrange your own ride or add it to the booking. The guides speak English and Portuguese, and they photograph the day so you have images of yourself in the canyon to take home.
