The experience

The tour opens at the rim of Fogo Volcano, where Fogo Lagoon sits 947 meters above sea level inside the crater. On clear days, views stretch across both the north and south coasts of São Miguel, and other volcanoes rise into sight from this single vantage point. The drive itself is part of the route: the operator notes that secondary roads between stops carry their own views, so the time spent traveling is not dead time. From there, the day moves through a sequence of named stops: Salto do Cabrito, a 40-meter waterfall with crystalline water; Santa Bárbara beach on the north coast, where the landscape and ocean views anchor the stop; and Ribeira Grande, the island's second-largest city, where you walk the historical main square and churches before heading inland.

The tea factory at Porto Formoso is the centerpiece of the afternoon. You enter an old, well-maintained building to learn how tea is grown and processed: the only place in Europe where all stages happen in one location. A free sample of organic tea (black or green, your choice) comes with the visit, and a hidden viewpoint on the approach gives a last view back over Ribeira Grande. After the factory, the route reaches Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, where multiple waterfalls drop through a valley and old water mills sit among lush vegetation. An optional walk is available depending on weather and your preference. If you skip it, the final stop is Ponta do Cintrão, a cliff formation on the northern coast where the colors of sky, ocean and land meet.

Lunch is a buffet of traditional Azorean dishes (meat, fish and vegetarian options) with a starter, main course, drink, dessert and coffee included. The operator notes that any dishes chosen outside the menu are charged separately. Bottled water, a local sweet delicacy, and an air-conditioned vehicle round out the day. The guide is a local with knowledge of the island. Pickup is included from your hotel or a nearby meeting point.
