The experience
You arrive at the meeting point and the certified guides walk you through the canyoning basics: safety concepts, equipment fit, what to expect at each technical point ahead. The route starts with a 20-minute walk along an old hydroelectric power station and volcanic fumarole areas, where the island's geology shows itself in the landscape. From there the canyon itself begins: a sequence of waterfalls, natural rock formations and obstacles that only open up through canyoning, each one requiring a different approach and a bit more skill than the last.
The guides provide technical and safety instruction at key points as you move through the canyon, so you're never navigating blind. The activity builds toward the final 20-meter rappel at Salto do Cabrito: the moment most people come for. Groups stay under eight, which means the guides can watch your form, adjust your line and give real attention to how you're moving through the water and over the rock.
Everything you need is provided: harness, helmet, rope, wetsuit and the rest of the technical kit. The operator carries comprehensive insurance, so the logistics are settled before you clip in. Guides speak English, Spanish or Portuguese depending on the group, and children from age eight are welcome if they meet the moderate fitness requirement.

Is this one for you?The meeting point is fixed, so if you're staying elsewhere on São Miguel or without a car, confirm transport before booking. The operator does not arrange it. Groups max out at eight, which means personalized attention through the waterfalls and technical sections, and the guides can adjust the route to your actual skill level rather than rushing a larger group through.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (12 to 17 years); Child (8 to 11 years). Under 8: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the walk like before the canyoning actually starts?
The opening walk takes 20 minutes and follows an old hydroelectric power station route through areas with volcanic fumaroles: the vents where the island's volcanic activity still shows. It's the approach to the canyon, not a hike into remote terrain.
How deep is the final rappel at Salto do Cabrito?
The final rappel is 20 meters. It's the climax of the route and the guides brief you on the technique before you descend, with full safety setup and their eyes on you the whole way down.
Do I need canyoning experience to book this?
No experience is required. The guides tailor the route to various skill levels and teach technical skills on-site. You do need moderate physical fitness: the activity involves climbing, swimming and navigating natural obstacles for four hours.
What happens if I'm not comfortable with the rappel?
The guides assess your comfort and skill at each technical point and adjust the approach. Talk to them about your concerns when you arrive. They work with groups of different confidence levels and can modify how you move through certain sections.
Are photos included, or do I need to bring a camera?
The guides photograph the experience and include those photos with your booking. Bringing your own camera into a canyon with waterfalls and rappelling is impractical, so the operator's photos are the record of the day.
What do I need to bring, and what's provided?
The operator provides all technical equipment: harness, helmet, rope, wetsuit and canyoning gear. Bring a change of clothes and a towel for after (not provided), and any personal items you want to keep dry. Transport to the meeting point is your responsibility unless you arrange it separately.
