Canyoning in Ribeira dos Caldeiroes: rappel, jump and swim
The return route follows the stream, not a trail back up.
Canyoning experience in Ribeira dos Caldeiroes combines rappelling down four waterfalls (6, 7, and 12 meters), optional jumps, and a scramble back through the streambed itself. Small groups stay under control while a certified guide handles all equipment and timing; the activity runs about three hours and suits anyone from age 6 onward, regardless of fitness level. Photos taken during the day arrive by email after you leave.
The Experience
You arrive with a free afternoon and no canyoning experience. The guide meets you, hands over a neoprene wetsuit, socks, canyoning boots, harness and helmet—everything fitted on the spot—then walks you fifteen minutes into Ribeira dos Caldeiroes to the canyon entrance. A second briefing covers the technical side: how to rappel, where to place your feet, how the rope system works. Then you step into the water.
The canyon unfolds in stages. You rappel six meters down the first waterfall, walk across rocks, then choose: jump into the pool below or rappel down instead. Walk again, rappel seven meters, walk, rappel twelve meters. An optional jump comes next—some people take it, some don't, and the guide moves at whatever pace keeps everyone steady. The whole sequence takes you deeper into the canyon, past rock formations the guide explains as you go, until you reach the exit point. Then instead of climbing back out the way you came, you follow the stream itself on the return, wading and scrambling through water and boulders.
Small groups mean the guide can watch each person closely and adjust timing so nobody feels rushed. You'll get photos from the activity emailed to you free after the day ends—the guide shoots during the canyon work, not as a separate stop.

Can I do this canyoning trip if I've never rappelled before?
Yes. The guide gives a full technical briefing before you start, and the first rappel is only six meters. The activity suits all fitness levels from age 6 onward, and the guide controls the pace so you move at your own speed.
What happens if I don't want to jump at the optional jump point?
You rappel down instead. The guide offers both options at each jump spot, and either choice keeps you moving through the canyon safely.
How do we get back out of the canyon after the rappelling?
The return route follows the stream itself—you wade and scramble back through the water and rocks rather than climbing back up the canyon wall.
What's included in the canyoning experience?
The certified guide, neoprene wetsuit, neoprene socks, canyoning boots, harness, helmet and rope are all provided. The guide also takes photos during the activity and emails them to you free of charge afterward.
How long does the whole experience take?
About three hours from start to finish, including the fifteen-minute walk to the canyon entrance, the technical briefing, the rappelling and jumping sequence, and the return walk through the stream.
