Ribeira dos Caldeirões Canyoning: Jumping, Abseiling & Ziplining
Three hours of vertical obstacles and waterfalls you overcome yourself
Level 1 canyoning in Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park on São Miguel Island combines jumping, abseiling, ziplining and sliding through natural waterfalls, with a live guide in English, Spanish or Portuguese, all equipment, activity insurance and photos included. The activity takes three hours total, with a 15-minute walk to the starting point and a 45-minute drive from Ponta Delgada. Children are welcome from age 6, and the experience suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.
The Experience
The drive from Ponta Delgada takes about 45 minutes to reach Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park in the north-eastern part of São Miguel Island. Once you arrive, your guide fits you with personal equipment and leads a short 15-minute walk to the starting point, where a safety briefing prepares you for what comes next. The park itself is the obstacle course: a series of vertical waterfalls you navigate using abseiling, jumping and ziplining techniques.
The tallest waterfall stands 8 metres high, tackled by abseiling down the rock face. Between the main obstacles are shorter walking sections that break up the intensity, and there is a dedicated slide and a 5-metre jump to add variety to the three-hour session. Your guide stays with the group throughout, managing safety and pacing so the day feels adventurous without becoming overwhelming. The activity works as a public group or can be arranged as a private session if you request it in advance.
Your guide captures photos and videos during the activity, so you leave with a record of what you did rather than just a memory of it. All the technical equipment—harnesses, ropes, helmets—is provided, and activity insurance covers the session. The park sits close enough to Ponta Delgada that a morning or afternoon slot fits easily into a larger itinerary on the island.
