The experience
Four hours in Vale das Lombadas means moving through an untouched landscape most visitors never reach. The valley sits deep in the Azores, ringed by cliffs and thick vegetation, and the route itself is the draw: you'll rappel down an imposing waterfall, wade through pools carved into rock, and navigate passages that demand both problem-solving and nerve. The terrain shifts constantly (sometimes you're climbing, sometimes descending on rope, sometimes moving through water), so the day never settles into a rhythm.
Your guides are certified through the International Canyoning Academy, and they lead groups of no more than eight, which means you get real attention instead of being herded through. Before you start, there's a technical and safety briefing that covers the equipment and the route. Once you're moving, the guides handle the rigging and the decisions about pace. You wear a full harness, helmet and wetsuit. The operator provides everything. Insurance is included, and so are photos taken during the activity: useful if you want proof of what you actually did out there.
The valley itself is the point: remote, steep-sided, with water running through it year-round. If you're after a canyoning experience that isn't a tourist loop, this is it. The operator notes that the route combines unique views with an intense physical challenge, so expect to work for the reward.
