The experience
The day starts with a short trek through Sintra's green slopes to reach Penedo da Amizade, a granite formation known among climbers for its range of routes and the views that open up during breaks. Once you arrive, the guide covers the basics of climbing, gets you into the gear (rope, harness, helmet, shoes, chalk), and you begin climbing routes matched to your age, fitness and experience. Beginners and experienced climbers both find options here. If your group has more than three people, an extra guide joins to keep the ratio at one guide per three climbers.
The surrounding forest and the sight of Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle frame the climbing, and the breaks give you time to take in both. Routes range from single-pitch climbs to multi-pitch lines for those with more experience. The rock needs to be dry for safe climbing, so the experience may need to be rescheduled in bad weather. If you can't make the new dates, you get a full refund. Weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, so booking on a weekday gives you a more authentic experience if your schedule allows.
You can choose between a shared group experience or a private session. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese, and children from age seven are welcome. All climbing equipment and insurance are included. Bring water and snacks if you want them during the breaks.
